The Veloist Club will be participating in this years Dairyland Dare. For some members this will be the third and final challenge to complete the Wisconsin Triple Crown Endurance Series. For others it will be a challenging ride to complete a 100k, 150k or 200k day.

Please join us for this event but you must sign up soon. Events such as these close out when they get to their maximum riders. This is still open but won’t last long. Same with hotels in the area. We have four club members already committed to this day. Let’s get more. Book a room with a friend for Friday night and we ride all day on Saturday.

Hotter than hell, that’s what this turned out to be, hotter than hell. But we rode anyway because that’s what we do.

Seven riders at the start and we picked up George along the way. Got a little help going north from a SE wind under cloudy skies and mild temps. Made it to Kenosha in great time as the temp fell near the lake.

Kathy ordered a “tall” coffee, to help compensate for her height.

Half the group headed home from there for a 50 miler  as John, E, me and 4’11.75″ Kathy headed north for more. We followed Sheridan Road past Carthage College up to County A, turned west and followed that to N to 45, north to JB to south on B down into Silver Lake for a short pit stop. Next stop was our usual stomping grounds done backwards as we rode west on County F into Twin Lakes, C to Wilmot and home. All totaled for 90 miles.

I got home with John and E’s help my legs where liked cooked linguini.

It was a great day for a ride and we took advantage of the winds and weather best we could which means our Monday ride will be shorter than last posted.

Monday Ride will be 50 miles starting at 7am, sorry if anyone was planning on the longer ride but I don’t think we’ll have the legs for a back to back.

Sunday Ride 7AM roll

This is a new early time please be ready to roll at 7am on Sunday Rides.

We will extend the regular Sunday ride to add miles for those that are able and ready to ride up to Kenosha. This is 50 miles. Figure 3 hours.

There will be a turn around point at Rt. 173 for those not wanting to go the full distance. The turn around will put you south on Hunt Club back to the starting point. There are lots of riders on this road if you need any assistance. The extended ride is due to today’s cancellation we won’t normally send you home alone. However do expect the Sunday distances to start going up so get you training rides in during the week.

Monday Ride 7AM roll

This was the ride we intended for Saturday so we are headed out to Lake Geneva and beyond. The plan is to roll north to Twin Lakes (bio/food) this is the 25 mile turn-around for 50 mile riders. We will continue through Lake Geneva to Gooseberries (bio/food) and into Burlington. Past Burlington heading south on County Road P, to Fish Hatchery to East on Karcher Road (JB) this will go east for 10 miles to County N and MB south to home. We will bio/water at MB so have food with you. The map attached is the basic idea. Distance 90-95 moderate pace.

Tour de Farms

The Veloist Cycling Club has once again accepted the challenge to fight MS by participating as a Team in the Bike MS Tour de Farms this June 23 and 24th. We rode in this event last year and it was very well organized, great roads, good food and entertainment. Can’t wait to do it again.

Sunday Ride 8AM roll

This is a recovery ride 16mph average please join us for 20-25 miles of easy riding.

Monday Ride 7AM roll (Bonus Day!)

Not 100% sure about this but I think a trip up to Kenosha for a coffee at the Common Grounds is in order. We’ll be back by 10:30 so you can go on with your day. Hope to see you all this weekend.

The Arcadia Brute, first stage of the Wisconsin Triple Crown Endurance Series lived up to it’s name this past Saturday for four Veloists. Tim, Donald, Isasio and myself drove nearly five hours north to Arcadia, WI to test our legs and our sanity. Both were brought into question many times during the day. The event is known for it’s monster climbs with grades reaching past 16%. That’s like riding up a wall if you’ve never tried it.

With temps reaching 90+ and winds from the south at 12-14mph we had good riding conditions. And since we started the day heading south by the time the winds were blowing hard we got a little push home. Very much needed and appreciated indeed.

Our only blunder of the day came when we missed the second rest stop and found ourselves with 20+ miles of climbing left, no water and little food. Luckily we found a farmer at the top of a hill that I named “Holy Shit that was hard” hill. He filled our bottles and we were on our way with a big lesson learned, pay attention to where the rest stops are and eat when you get there. On hard efforts where you’re burning over 4,000 calories in the day you need to keep the tank topped off.

We managed to stay together throughout the entire day. The riders first to the top of each big climb waited for the others as we then bombed the descents at 48mph (that was E’s top recorded speed). The scenery overall was spectacular as we rolled through farmland and wooded hills. I’d do it again, but not this year.

We didn’t have the chance to shoot many pictures just image us rolling through lush green hills and farms because that’s how we spent our Saturday ride.
