Eddy Merckx, for me, has long been a cycling god. He’s just one of those guys you read about that completely captures your imagination and makes you feel great about throwing your leg over a saddle. He wasn’t supposed to be as good as he was. Physically he had, and still has, heart issues today. He was told he just wasn’t pro cycling stock. I guess someone got that very wrong.
This “eater of men” rode and won the Classics, track races and was a winner of all three major Grand Tours. His famous “Molteni” orange and black kit is one of the best recognized cycling graphics in the world.
Dominating cycling from the mid-60s to the mid-70s, Eddy Merckx (Belgian) was known then and is still known today as simply “The Cannibal.”
I’ve been working with the idea of creating a series of Art Prints called the “Heroes of the Tour”. Men like Jacques Anquetil, Hinault and Coppi but I had to start here, with Merckx. My very first idea sketch is on this page also if you’re interested to see where things like this start.
I hope you enjoy Eddy Merckx – The Cannibal and look for more “Heroes of the Tour” in the future.
