Alpe d’Huez | Cycling Art Print
Iconic mountain cycling climb.
Famous for its 21 twisting hairpin switchbacks, the climb to Alpe d’Huez from Bourg d’Oisans has been a favorite among cyclists for many years. Making its debut in the 1952 Tour de France, this beast of a climb will continue to test the legs and lungs of tour riders for many years to come. I’ve ridden up and down this climb the day before a Tour de France stage and it really should be on your cycling bucket list.

Col du Tourmalet | Cycling Art Print
Original Bicycle Print
Made famous in many Tour de France stages, the legendary Col du Tourmalet puts riders to the test year after year. As part of Stage 18, racing from Pau to Hautacam, this 145 kilometer stage turns violently upward 95 kilometers into the day. The Col is where true climbers and GC contenders have their final opportunity in the mountains to claim victory in Paris.
Michael’s Col du Tourmalet bicycle print celebrates the famous 2115 meter hors catégorie climb with old school style and grace. As our rider ascends into the clouds, we can only wonder what this grueling road must be like in the heat of competition.

The striking white tower that stands atop this mighty mountain calls to many a bicycle rider to make pilgrimage and best this lonely, unforgiving road. Bon courage.

Marco Pantani | Cycling Legend | Cycling Art Print
Il Pirata!
Marco Pantani was considered by most one of the cycling worlds best climbers. With his trade mark bandana, earrings and goatee, the Pirate was always looking to steal the day in the high mountains. Pantani’s attacking style and aggressive riding turned him into a fan favorite in the late 1990s. And his early passing in 2004, at age 34, was a great loss for cycling fans everywhere.

Didi Senft
Since 1993 Dieter “Didi” Senft has been showing up to key stages of the Tour de France and pushing his champions onward. Dressed in his famous devil costume, Didi is known as “El Diablo.” Any fan of the tour has seen Didi in action and will again, and this bicycle print is an homage to his devilish antics on the sidelines.

Merckx Legend | Cycling Art Print
A cyclist for all times.
Eddy Merckx is the undisputed all-time biggest winning professional bike rider on the planet. He has had competitors but not many. Five times winning the Tour de France. Five times winning the Giro d’Italia. Seven times winning Milan-San Remo, three times conquering the cobbles of Paris-Roubaix and the list goes on to a stunning 525 professional wins.
Nicknamed “The Cannibal” for his insatiable appetite for winning, Eddy Merckx came to the start line to gobble up the competition and only to win.
It took me a while to finalize this image, and if you’re wondering about the “heart” dimple, well thats my little nod to his master frame builder, Ugo De Rosa.

Gino Bartali | Legend | Cycling Art Print
Gino the Pious.
Bartali was a two time winner of the Tour de France, 1938 and 1948 – and a three time winner of the Giro d’Italia, 1936, 1937 and 1946. Along with numerous Grand Tour stage victories, classics and stage races. A powerful climber Bartali did his most damage in the mountains winning Mountain stage classifications for many years.
During the Second World War, Bartali was allowed to continue training and used this as a cover for his role helping the Resistance and persecuted Jews by smuggling secret documents inside the frame of his bike. In 2013 he was recognized for his war efforts by Yad Vashem and awarded the honor Righteous Among the Nations.

The Alt Tour 2021 | Morton | Cycling Art Print
Brest to Paris!
Lachan Morton rode 5,500 KM from Brest to Paris starting on the same day as the 2021 TdF following the route including transfers, a heroic effort! More like the 1903 Tour de France, Lachan remained alone and self sufficient for his adventure. His monster effort could not be recreated by many people on the planet making this a truly epic ride to raise awareness and funds for the charity World Bicycle Relief.
The ride has been well documented by sponsor Rapha and is worthy of your viewing time. Watch it here.
In my likeness of Lachan Morton I’ve chosen to keep the overall image simple and strong like he seems to be, but I’ve taken the liberty of creating his well know mess of curly black hair with the outline map of France. Simple and straightforward wins the day.

Salute!
This year is the 109th edition of the Giro d’Italia, a three-week Grand Tour cycling stage race. For the very first time the race will start in Nessebar, Bulgaria on May 8th and will finish in Rome on the 31st.
With the final stage ending in Rome I had no hesitation and went right to drawing the colosseum. Using the crumbling wall of the structure as a mountain side fit nicely into how I like to put unlikely objects together in my art.
The pink of the Maglia Rosa (the winners pink jersey) jumps nicely off the dark blue sky and the riders glass of pink Prosecco added the final touch. Bellissimo!

I am very fortunate and get to spend time painting, hiking and cycling in Arizona almost every year. It’s a great place to escape the midwest winters. And when I’m really lucky its the wet season and the desert is in bloom.

With the first three days of the Vuelta starting in the Netherlands and finishing in Spain, this was the inspiration behind my Vuelta Red Bull and Windmill watercolor bicycling poster. The big red bull chases the peloton tilting at windmills as he goes. Bright, emotional, exciting are the words to describe the Vuelta and this print.
