Il Pirata!
Marco Pantani was considered by most one of the cycling worlds best climbers. With his trade mark bandana, earrings and goatee, the Pirate was always looking to steal the day in the high mountains. Pantani’s attacking style and aggressive riding turned him into a fan favorite in the late 1990s. And his early passing in 2004, at age 34, was a great loss for cycling fans everywhere.

Since 1993 Dieter “Didi” Senft has been showing up to key stages of the Tour de France and pushing his champions onward. Dressed in his famous devil costume, Didi is known as “El Diablo.” Any fan of the tour has seen Didi in action and will again, and this bicycle print is an homage to his devilish antics on the sidelines.

The 2017 Tour de France kicks off with a grand depart from Dusseldorf, Germany and I was there! In fact I was at every stage of the Tour de France this year drawing pictures and gathering material for year and years worth of Cycling Art.
This 2017 TdF Cycling Art Print (inspired by Chris Froome) will always have a special place in my home because this was the first year — I went to Paris!

Mixed media painting, acrylics and pen on canvas. This work is an early exploration with a new painting technique. He’s Big Dutchman because he has a MVDP vibe.
The work was done on a stretched canvas, it will be removed for shipping and rolled. The buyer will have to have it re-stretched for framing or trimmed and mounted for framing. Both are simple procedures your frame shop is capable of doing for you. If you have any questions just send me a note.

Cycling happens rain or shine, wind or calm, hot or cold we push ourselves to the very limits we can endure. I painted this with acrylic paints and mostly pallet knives for a very heavily textured paint finish.
