Our heroes.
Everyday they go to battle, wage war with their rivals, conquer their fears, endure grueling adversity and pain. They’ve climbed atop many a podium and we continue to put them on even higher pedestals. They hold a place in our hearts and minds few mortals can occupy.
It’s one of the things I love most about cycling. There are no shortage of mythical heroes, that take up the sword and slay dragons. We revere them, sing their praises and adore them. We pass on their stories to every generation that follows. Each with their own brand of individual super hero strengths. Each unique but in the end all of them the same.
They are the victors.
They offer us a glimpse of what is possible, even when the odds seem completely insurmountable. They deliver us hope on two wheels. Catapulting themselves beyond staggering odds and adversity with the grace and style of a gentleman. The tenacity of a wild boar and the charm of a playful elf.
No matter who they are or how they do it, our heroes allow us hope as we drive our hybrid cars to our designated work space behind our keyboards.
Hope that we will some day take a podium place at the local crit. Hope that we make it to the top of the hill just outside of town we call “The Nemesis.” Hope that in some small way we can make a difference as we throw a leg over the saddle for a hundred mile charity ride.
Hope that like them, against all odds, we will emerge victorious.
