The making of Divine Providence – Cycling Art

with No Comments

Like with so many of my Cycling Art Prints and drawings, I have to start with a good idea. Sometimes they come quickly and other times I have to work at it more. In this particular case, the ideas for creating an art image for the Divine Providence Cyclocross event came quickly.

Within a day of being contracted to create work, I sent an image of a Cyclocross Patriot hoping on his bike to Richard Fries, director of the event. He loved it but we didn’t stop there.

After a few days and a few more drawings, we started to discuss the idea of creating a “Winged Rider”. I believe the idea of Valhalla came up in the conversation and that was it – winged Cyclists flying through the skies, the power, the mystery — really, how cool is all that? So that’s when I started to draw more images of “Winged Riders.”

Some where better than others but the “Idea” was right and that’s what’s most important — getting the idea for my cycling art right. I actually think creating cycling art that has an idea built in is what helps separate me out from other artists working in this space. At least that’s what I think.

The rest as they say, is history. Once Richard and his team bought onto the “Winged Rider” concept I went through my usual process of creating a digital drawing over the original sketches. And then creating versions, changing colors, designing type and refining until I’m happy with the final look of the art.

In this case, I’m very happy. I think my Divine Providence Cyclocross “Winged Rider” is one of my better works and I look forward to showcasing it in person this October. That’s where I’ll also be selling the original pen and ink drawings that lead me to this final work.
